From mental health to injury prevention and recovery, the NHLPA is committed to safeguarding the total well-being of its members. Our Health & Wellness initiatives ensure players are equipped with the resources, education, and care needed to thrive in their careers and lives.
Whether it’s setting a global standard in concussion care, advocating for player rights, or empowering players with confidential support through First Line, we’re building a game where health, safety, and humanity are never left on the bench.

The first of its kind in professional sports, First Line was designed to directly address mental health issues faced by players and their families and was developed in collaboration with Opening Minds and the Mental Health Commission of Canada. The course is offered to NHLPA members voluntarily and is delivered in-person or online by an NHLPA consulting psychologist and former NHL Player, Jay Harrison. All players who complete the First Line training receive a certificate of completion from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
